One November night we hung out at your place as we usually do. Casually just watching tv and listening to music. I turned to you and wondered if I could ask you a question. ''Do you wanna go to New York with me?'' I said anxiously, well aware that we had only known each other for two months. All the background noise became mute for the moment and you looked at me with big eyes. "Yes. Yes I do." you said with your most relaxed voice. It was as if you didn't hesitate at all. Two weeks later we booked the tickets. And it turned out to be one of the best trips I've ever been on.
Early morning on my 20th birthday someone knocked on the door. Barely awake and still in my pj's I went up from my cozy, warm bed and opened the door. And there you were. With balloons, a bag in your hand and my all time favorite: carrot cake. That feeling you gave me that day. It was as if my heart almost exploded with love for you. No one had ever done that for me before. I remember thinking that you had gotten to know me so well in such a short amount of time.
On a normal, boring day in February, my sister from back home texted me. She told me that my horse died. It was as if everything inside of me turned into ice. I didn't sleep that night. The morning after, I walked in to class with my head looking at the ground, trying to hold my tears down even though I could feel them coming up my throat. You were the first person that went up to me and asked me how I was feeling and then you told me that you were sorry it happened. I couldn't restrain myself anymore and bursted into tears in the classroom. You put a careful hand on my back. So caring and so so considerate.
Your boyfriend and I planned your whole 21st birthday together. We picked out the most expensive custom made cake just for you. Because we wanted you to love it. Later that night, when your day was almost over, the three of us sat on your bed and me and Chasen gave you presents. You said thank you and cried. And it was all tears of joy. I remember thinking to myself that you deserve everything that's good in life.
I want you to know that you becoming a part of my life is one of the best things that has happened to me. You'll always have a friend in me no matter where on Earth I am located.
And even if we never speak again, I'll look back at my year in California and I'll always smile. Because of you.
